Petra, Jordan : Built during the 8th century BC and occupied by different peoples until the trade routes changed around the 7th century AD, the location is now a world heritage site. Forgotten by the peoples of the western hemisphere, it only came to their renewed attention in the 19th century. You could spend days in this place but we only had one. Not enough to do it justice, but enough to get a flavour and make a mental note to return on another day (or in another lifetime). The approach through the siq is dramatic with dark shadows below and bright highlights above. Emerging from the siq, the Khazneh and the colours stun at first sight. It is hot and dry and there are tourists, but also grazing sheep and dust. In 1999, there was cellphone reception too. Progress is unstoppable. These pictures provide a glimpse, but it would take a book describe this place.

La cité de Petra, Jordanie : Construite et sculptée à partir du 8ème siècle av JC, cette ville semi-troglodyte a été occupée par différentes peuples jusqu’au 7ème siècle de notre ère, puis abandonnée semble-t-il à cause des modifications intervenues dans les routes du commerce. Ce site, connu des Romains et aujourd’hui classé patrimoine mondial, a été oublié en occident jusqu’au 19 siècle. On pourrait passer des jours à admirer la beauté des structures, la couleur des rochers, le jeu de lumière et de contraste. Nous n’avions qu’une seule ; juste assez de temps pour se promettre un retour, dans cette vie ou la prochaine. La voie d’approche, par le siq, une faille profonde, se fait dans la semi-obscurité et à la sortie de ce couloir on est frappé par les couleurs du Khazneh, façade taillée dans le rocher rose. La chaleur, le sable, les touristes font partie du spectacle, mais aussi les téléphones portables (déjà en 1999), les moutons et les bergers. Dans ces images, on a une petite idée du site. Cela prendrait bien plus pour l’apprécier à sa juste valeur.
