After the opening of trade with Japan in the mid 19th century, a number of western businessmen established themselves in the Nagasaki area to conduct trade and other industrial activities. The family names of Alt, Ringer and especially Glover (a Scot) are closely tied to the history of this region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Glover Garden, on a steep hillside overlooking Nagasaki harbour, is a cultural property dedicated to conserving artifacts and architecture from this period.

Après l’ouverture du Japon au commerce avec l’Occident au milieu du 19ième siècle, plusieurs hommes d’affaires se sont établis dans les environs de Nagasaki pour gérer leurs activités commerciales et industrielles. Les surnoms d’Alt, de Glover, et de Ringer sont liés à l’histoire du Japon entre le milieu du 19ième et le début du 20ième siècle. Le jardin de Glover, sur un coteau assez pentu en surplomb du port de Nagasaki, conserve plusieurs bâtiments et souvenirs culturels de cette période.
