In Romanesque architecture the bell gable is quite common. In regions of France such as the northern Gard and the southern Ardèche, romanesque churches are common and hence the accompanying bell gable. Some have 4 eyes, some 3, and often there are fewer bells than eyes.

Le clocher à peigne est assez courant dans les églises romanes. Dans les Cévennes du nord du Gard et du sud de l’Ardèche, il y a de très jolis clochers – souvent de taille démesurée par rapport au village autour. Ces clochers peuvent comporter 2, 3 ou 4 “yeux” et souvent moins de cloches que d’yeux – comme en témoignent ces images.
