In the National Museum of Catalan Art in Barcelona, a long stroll through the medieval religious art section turns up some compelling images. Here is one example – an altar front piece depicting the Archangels. We couldn’t remember how many there were, catechism long forgotten. But we counted three on this altar plate : Michael who gets 3 of 4 panels, and Raphael and Gabriel who share the upper left panel. Checking later it seems like three archangels is the number usually cited. Apparently, the bible mentions Michael but not the others so this may explain why Michael gets 3 of 4 panels on the altar plate. The specific source in Catalonia of this work is unknown, but it is in a style identical to that in the church of Sant Pau de Casserres.

Au Musée National d’Art Catalan, une balade à travers la section d’art médiéval permet de découvrir des images surprenantes. Ici c’est une devanture d’autel montrant les archanges. Au fait, combien en a-t-il ? Sur cette œuvre, ils sont trois : Michel qui est cité dans trois des quatre panneaux, et Raphaël et Gabriel qui partagent le panneau du haut à gauche. Vérification faite, trois serait le bon compte selon la tradition. Il semblerait que la bible mentionne Michel mais pas les 2 autres, et cela doit expliquer pourquoi Michel figure sur trois des quatre panneaux de la devanture.
