Ontario, Canada, is famous for it’s parkways. Along the Saint Lawrence river banks around the town of Gananoque there is a stretch of the former main Montreal-Toronto highway, now relegated to a tourist route (the main highway now follows another route). The 40 km stretch of broad scenic parkway, once a four-lane highway, and now only a 2 lane road (the other lane is for cycles), is a pleasure to behold on a sharp autumn day. Likewise, further west, the Loyalist Parkway runs along the shores of Lake Ontario following a route used by United Empire Loyalists fleeing the American revolution in the late 18th century.
